Top Prospects Tournament Features Brahmas

Jan 25, 2016

FRISCO, TX – The North American Hockey League announced the rosters for the league’s Top Prospects Tournament in February, and it featured six Lone Star Brahmas.

Since the Brahmas are currently in second place in the South Division, they were allowed to send four players to represent their division.  Players without an NCAA commitment at the time of the selection were allowed to participate in this two-day tournament.

Defensemen Bud Madej and Dalton Skelly and forwards Martin Mellberg and Alex Berardinelli will represent Team South in Michigan next month.  Berardinelli’s 20 goals are the most of any player on the South roster and Skelly’s 19 assists rank first on the South’s defensive core.

Additionally, defenseman and Ferris State commit Cameron Clarke will skate for the NAHL Selects team, which identifies the players who have garnered interest from NHL Central Scouting and are eligible for this summer’s NHL Draft.  Clarke leads all NAHL defensemen in scoring with 33 points in 38 games.

The five skaters will have a familiar face on the bench as Dan Wildfong was named the assistant coach for the event.  Wichita Falls Wildcats John LaFontaine was named the head coach for the South since the Wildcats are the first place team in the division.

The tournament will take place at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, MI from February 15-16.  The NAHL will also share the spotlight with the NA3HL Top Prospects Tournament and NAPHL 18U and 16U Dixon Cup Championship Games.

Team South will kick start the event with a 1:30 p.m. CST game against Team East on Monday the 15th.  Tuesday, the South will play the Midwest division at 11:00 a.m.

Fairbanks leads all teams with nine players selected and Wichita Falls is second with eight.  Last season, over 200 scouts attended the event, representing nearly every NHL team and NCAA Division I program.
