CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — It’s 85 degrees here down south. Hot, just like the Brahmas, who are 9-1-0 in their last ten games. After a lackluster start to the season, Lone Star is finally starting to play the way they need to. Per Head Coach Dan Wildfong, there’s still room for improvement, but the team is certainly on the right track.
This weekend, the Brahmas look to keep that going against the Corpus Christi IceRays.
The Brahmas are coming off a home sweep of the Amarillo Bulls in which they took the lead in this season’s Battle of the Cattle. For their part, the IceRays are also riding a four-game winning streak of their own.
Much like the Brahmas, the IceRays got off to a rough start. These past four games, though, their offense has come alive. The Rays have scored 19 goals in back-to-back sweeps of the Topeka RoadRunners. That suddenly explosive offense will meet one of the best defenses in the NAHL this weekend, and it will certainly be interesting to see which team comes out on top.
In terms of special teams, neither the Brahmas nor the IceRays boast a particularly effective power play at this point. The Brahmas have been converting at a 16% clip, while the IceRays have scored on just 10% of their opportunities with a man advantage.
The Brahmas’ penalty kill has been excellent, though. They’ve successfully killed 88.7% of penalties, which is good for second in the league — behind only Fairbanks. The IceRays’ PK percentage is much more pedestrian at 77.2%, so the Brahmas do hold a significant edge there.
