Defenseman Jordan Wishman Commits to Michigan State

Oct 24, 2017

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX — Former Brahma and Robertson Cup Champion Jordan Wishman has announced his commitment to Michigan State University.

Wishman, a 6-foot-1, 187-pound defenseman out of Des Moines, Iowa, will be heading to Michigan State for the 2018-19 season and is currently playing with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL. He has registered one assist in four games played.

Last season, though, was spent entirely with the Lone Star Brahmas. Wishman’s first year of junior hockey was a good one. He played 51 games for Lone Star, picking up eight assists and finishing with a +6 rating on the season. He played heavy minutes on the penalty kill, and was always dependable on the back end.

“Playing in Lone Star was huge for my development. I learned a lot of important lessons and details that are key for having success. My time there definitely got the ball rolling towards me getting this opportunity,” Wishman said. “I’m very thankful to have had the chance to be a part of such a classy organization and have nothing but good things to say about Brahmaland.”

As an organization, the Brahmas pride themselves on player advancement. While Wishman’s return to the Brahmas would have been a welcome boost to the Lone Star blue line, it’s always great to see former players finding success as they move up the ranks.

Dubuque has been a terrific fit for Wishman. “It’s been a great experience so far,” he said. “The coaches, support staff, my teammates, and my billets all have played a big role in me getting this opportunity so I am very grateful to them and to be a part of this organization.”

After this season in Dubuque, Wishman will be off to play college hockey.

Wishman has been courted by some other Division I programs over the past year or so, but when Michigan State came calling, the decision was clear.

“It all happened pretty fast. I started talking to them after the Fall Classic in Pittsburgh and from there it just kind of took off,” Wishman said. “I was really interested right from the start.”

Wishman visited this weekend and was even more sure that Michigan State was where he wanted to be. “I knew right away when I got on campus that I wanted to be a Spartan,” he said. “The decision was an easy one, you can’t beat everything they do for you to ensure that you are setting yourself up for success so when they offered I pretty much said yes on the spot.”

In the end, it’s no surprise that a program like Michigan State was interested in Wishman, whose defensively sound play, work ethic, and determination to continue to develop has always impressed coaches and teammates alike.

“It still doesn’t quite feel like [committing to Michigan State] really happened,” Wishman said. “I’m really happy and excited to have the opportunity to be a part of such a great program with so much tradition. It is definitely a weight off of my shoulders, now I can just focus on playing and getting better every day, which I look forward to.”

Once he’s finished with his junior hockey career, Wishman plans to to major in finance, although that could always change between now and when he sets foot on campus. “What’s nice is that I don’t have to officially declare my major until I’ve been on campus for two years so I still have some time,” Wishman said.

In any case, making a decision on what to study isn’t on the forefront of Wishman’s mind right now. The first thing on the road ahead is his season with Dubuque, and college comes after. What is certain is this: Wishman will put in the work and then some in any task he tackles, up to and including hockey and school.
