Deadline Deals: Brahmas Acquire Guderian from Odessa

Feb 2, 2015

With the North American Hockey League trade deadline approaching on Friday evening, the Lone Star Brahmas finalized its first deadline move on Monday morning.

The Brahmas acquired center and captain Chad Guderian from the Odessa Jackalopes in return for forward Eric Carreras.

“(Guderian) gives us a lot more depth, especially on the penalty kill,” head coach Dan Wildfong said. “His work ethic is exactly what we want here. He’s someone hard to play against and that’s what wins in the playoffs.”

On the season, the native of Coppell, Texas scored six goals and 10 assists in 44 games played. He has 32 career points in the NAHL and has spent the last two and a half seasons with Odessa.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound forward can contribute to both special team units and he is strong on face-offs. Guderian is a two-way center who is very efficient in the defensive end.

Additionally, “he’s a great leader. You want those guys in the locker room,” Wildfong said.

It is no mystery that the Brahmas are going for the Robertson Cup Championship this season and sometimes you have to sacrifice parts of the future. Carreras has one more year of junior hockey eligibility and scored 17 points in 34 games played.

“Carreras will be sadly missed here,” Wildfong said. “Next year he would fit into our plans perfectly. It’s just a good hockey trade for both teams.”

Guderian will report to the Brahmas on Tuesday morning. Guderian is eligible to suit up for his first game as a Brahma against Wichita Falls on Wednesday.

The former Jackalope has already received some warm welcomes to North Richland Hills and Raising Canes tweeted that they’ll give him a free box combo.

Be sure to follow the Brahmas this week because Lone Star needs to make at least one more move before Friday’s trade deadline to trim their roster to 23 players.
