Brahmas Swat Killer Bees On The Road

Dec 28, 2014

The Lone Star Brahmas rolled into the Rio Grande Valley after a disappointing split in Odessa looking to get their road game going. Roman Uchyn had a chance early in the period on a rebound from just off the right post, but Nick Schmit was able to go post to post to rob Uchyn with the glove. The only other real scoring chance came on an outstanding individual effort by Liam Stirtzinger as he skated his way through and around three defenders on his way to the goal. Unfortunately his move around the final defender put him too deep to get anything on the shot and Schmit kicked it aside with his left pad.

Early in the second period Anton Santesson made two big defensive plays to thwart Rio Grande opportunities. On the first he knifed down a home run pass intended forAnthony Croston coming out of the penalty box. On the second he bailed out the defense with a diving shot block after a turn over deep in the defensive zone. The plays kept the game scoreless setting the stage for some individual heroics by Alexey Solovyev. With the Killer Bees on the power play, Solovyev stepped in front of a pass as Rio Grande attempted to enter the zone and took it the other way. Solovyev outhustled two defenders into the attacking zone and blasted it past Schmit glove side from the top of the left wing circle for his sixth of the year and second shorty.

Ludvig Larsson just missed netting an insurance goal at 10:46 of the third when he picked up a loose puck near the bottom of the right wing circle and dented the post with a wrister. With 1:04 remaining in the contest Rio Grande called Schmit to the bench and the Brahmas quickly cashed in just 14 second later. Sebastian Vidmar put the puck in the net from the far point for his league leading 21st of the season. Sean Giles picked up the assist on the play. Pat Egan put the icing on the cake with 1.2 seconds left on a slow roller from about 170 feet away.
