Weekend Preview: ‘Tis the season for preseason

Oct 7, 2020

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TEXAS — The Lone Star Brahmas are kicking off the 2020-21 year by hosting two preseason games on October 9 and 11. The Brahmas will face-off against the New Mexico IceWolves on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and play again on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. versus the Odessa Jackalopes at NYTEX Sports Centre.

Last season recap

After COVID-19 prematurely ended the 2019-20 regular NAHL season, the Brahmas are ready to make up for lost time. The team led the league with a 42-9-1-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL) record, scoring 190 goals in 53 games played. Before the year was cut short, Lone Star was headed steadily towards the postseason with their eyes on the Robertson Cup, going on a six-game winning streak and capturing eight out of their last ten games played.

Who’s back

The Brahmas return nine skaters from the 2019-20 roster, including forwards Joey Baez, Dylan Smith, Stefan Miklakos, Andrew DeCarlo and Jack Collins and defensemen Mitchell Digby, Cole Beilke, Malcolm Palmer and Joey Trazzera. For the majority of the skaters, this is their final year of NAHL and junior hockey eligibility.

Who’s not

Lone Star loses their stand-out goalie tandem, made up of Cayden Bailey and Ludvig Persson; the pair achieved an astounding 18 shutouts during the 2019-20 season. Twelve of the Brahmas from last season’s roster are now playing in NCAA hockey across the United States.

By the numbers

  • The Brahmas went 8-0 against the New Mexico IceWolves during the 2019-20 season and have an 8-0 record against them overall
  • The Brahmas went 9-0 against the Odessa Jackalopes during the 2019-20 season and have a 59-15 record against them overall

What’s next

The Brahmas open the NAHL 2020-21 regular season against the New Mexico IceWolves with two matchups at home on Oct. 23 and 24.
