Series preview: Brahmas open regular season against New Mexico

Oct 23, 2020

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TEXAS — It’s been a long seven months without hockey, but the hiatus ends today. This weekend, the Lone Star Brahmas begin the NAHL 2020-21 regular season against the New Mexico IceWolves in a two-game series at NYTEX Sports Centre.

The Brahmas and IceWolves have only met up eight times, as last season was New Mexico’s first in the NAHL. Lone Star holds an 8-0-0-0 record against the team. Most recently, the pair played a preseason game against each other on October 9, where Lone Star took home the “W”.

The Brahmas have been hard at work in the offseason to continue the momentum the team brought to the table last year, leading the NAHL with a record of 42-9-1-1 and accumulating 86 points. Behind the bench, the 2020-21 year will be Brahmas Head Coach Dan Wildfong’s eighth season at the helm of the team in the NAHL-era, aided by Assistant Coach Andrew Whiteside, a new addition to the coaching staff.

“We’re excited to get the season started,” said Coach Wildfong. “We didn’t get a chance to finish what we started last season because of COVID-19, but we’re ready to get back out there and do it again. New Mexico is a good team, but we’re up for the challenge. We can’t wait.”

The roster features nine returning players, including forwards Joey Baez, Dylan Smith, Stefan Miklakos, Andrew DeCarlo and Jack Collins and defensemen Mitchell Digby, Cole Beilke, Malcolm Palmer and Joey Trazzera. Baez and Digby both received end-of-the-year NAHL awards, with Baez selected to the All-NAHL and All-South Division Team and Digby named to the All-Rookie squad.

The new crop of Brahmas take the ice at 7:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Tickets are still available at https://www.etix.com/ticket/v/13828/nytex-sports-centre or at the NYTEX Sports Centre Box Office. Can’t make it to the Shoebox? Catch the broadcast on HockeyTV.com.
