Lone Star Brahmas Avoid Shutout With Late Goal

The Lone Star Brahmas and Corpus Christi Icerays both came out of the NAHL Showcase Tournament with two wins apiece. The Brahmas made the long road trip to the Gulf Coast to face the Icerays in their home opener on Saturday evening.

Corpus Christi controlled much of the play early spending an inordinate amount of time in the Brahmas defensive zone. At the 12:24 mark, the Icerays won a draw in their end and as they headed up ice Hayden Hanson fell turning Tyler Johnson loose on is own. Johnson drove the net and sent it over TJ Black’s blocker for a 1 – 0 lead. Icerays’ Captain Joe Chitwood picked up the assist on the goal. The Brahmas had two power play opportunities late but could not find the back of the net. Then with 14 seconds left Roman Uchyn was hit with a holding call.

Lone Star killed off the carry over power play, but a cross checking call on Johan Steen led to a a goal at 4:17 off the stick of Nathan Bryer. The Icerays worked the puck around the perimeter from Trevor Heuser to Ryan Cusin who found Bryer low on the right side for a one timer five hole on Black.

The Brahmas finally got on the board at 13:25 of the third. Uchyn pulled an offensive zone faceoff back to the point which was sent on goal. The puck bounced around to the left side of the goal. Sebastian Vidmar and Steen had pokes at it before Uchyn put a backhander into the back of the net. Lone Star pulled Black with a minute to go and put a lot of pressure on the Icerays with the extra attacker, but could not get the puck past Andrew Lindgren for the equalizer.
